How to Pray (Even If You Don’t Know How)

Prayer isn’t a ritual — it’s a relationship. It’s not about saying the right thing; it’s about saying what’s true. God isn’t waiting for perfect words. He’s listening for an open heart.

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” — Psalm 145:18

Start with Honesty

You don’t have to sound holy or polished. Just talk to God the way you’d talk to someone who loves you — because that’s exactly what He does. Start where you are, with whatever is on your mind.

There’s no wrong way to begin. You might say something like:

  • “God, I don’t even know what to say right now…”
  • “Lord, I’m scared and I need Your help.”
  • “Thank You for today — help me see what You’re doing in it.”

Keep It Simple

Jesus Himself said we don’t need long speeches or fancy words. The power of prayer isn’t in our performance — it’s in God’s presence. He already knows what we need, but He wants us to bring it to Him anyway, because prayer grows relationship.

“When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.” — Matthew 6:6

A Pattern You Can Try

If you’d like a simple way to pray, try this four-step pattern:

  • Adore — Start by thanking God for who He is and what He’s done.
  • Confess — Be honest about where you’ve fallen short or need help.
  • Thank — Express gratitude for His grace, provision, and care.
  • Ask — Bring your needs, hopes, and dreams before Him.

Don’t Overthink It

Prayer isn’t about eloquence — it’s about presence. Sometimes you’ll have words; sometimes you’ll just have tears or silence. God hears it all. The Holy Spirit even intercedes for us when we can’t find the words ourselves (Romans 8:26).

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” — Philippians 4:6
